Beginning Genealogy
Where to start? Find your oldest relative. Ask for names, dates, locations and ports of entry.
If you do not know the island or freguesia, start your search in the United States. Use U.S. Census Records.
Look for birth and death certificates, naturalization or citizenship papers. Check old letters and have them translated in necessary
Once you have the island and the freguisia you can continue your search.
You can search using free search engines such as Google or Bing. Another free each is www.familysearch.org Paid searches include www.ancestry.com and www.archives.com

Genealogy Day – Saturday, February 7th, 2015 – Sacramento
The Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society of Sacramento (PHCS) is excited to announce a genealogy event for anyone interested in Portuguese genealogy.

Doug da Rocha Holmes – PHCS board member & professional genealogist
Admission: FREE
Donations to PHCS will be gratefully accepted and will be used to further our mission of retaining the history and culture of the Portuguese people in the greater Sacramento Area.
The day will include a presentation on beginning genealogy by Mary Ann Marshall and a presentation on advanced/DNA genealogy by Doug Holmes. We will have questions and answer time following each presentation. Wi-Fi is available, so please bring whatever device you would like in order to connect to the internet. Light refreshments will be available.
