{"id":379,"date":"2025-02-28T04:04:46","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T04:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sacramentophcs.com\/?page_id=379"},"modified":"2026-01-03T01:05:30","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T01:05:30","slug":"membership","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sacramentophcs.com\/index.php\/membership\/","title":{"rendered":"Membership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Organized in 1979 as the Portuguese American Historical Committee for the purpose of preserving and promoting the historical Portuguese heritage of the Riverside\/Pocket area and all of greater Sacramento<\/em>.  <em>Membership in the Society entitles you to receive the quarterly newsletter <strong>O Progresso<\/strong>,  notification of events, and reduced admissions when applicable. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"122\" height=\"50\" src=\"https:\/\/sacramentophcs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-380\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Portugal<\/strong>, a tiny European country less than one fourth the size of California, has had a lasting impact on world history as a land of navigators and explorers:&nbsp; great figures such as Ferdinand Magellan (Magalhaes), Vasco da Gama, and John (Joao) Rodrigues Cabrillo, who discovered California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is that same inborn spirit of adventure and exploration that led to the founding of the <strong><em>Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>in 1979.&nbsp; Portuguese Community Park, Portuguese street names in new housing developments, namesake school for the original Lisbon schools established by Portuguese immigrants; and obtained historical registry for a number of Portuguese meetings halls, and churches.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHCS published <em>Portuguese Pioneers of the Sacramento Area<\/em>, documenting the Portuguese presence in Sacramento and neighboring counties.&nbsp; We have published extracts of the book in several brochures; and have collaborated with <em>Portuguese Heritage Publications of California, Inc<\/em>., and other media to document and preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Portuguese in California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;the historical and cultural heritage of Portuguese in California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"142\" height=\"51\" src=\"https:\/\/sacramentophcs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-384\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PHCS\u2019 quarterly newsletter, <strong><em>O Progresso<\/em><\/strong> features articles of interest about the Portuguese population, current events and activities, local historical information, genealogical information and an annual <em>Master Calendar<\/em> of Northern California organizational events and <em>festas.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We sponsor exhibits of Portuguese artifacts and historical materials at State and local levels, including the educational system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We sponsor benefit activities to raise funds for the annual PHCS scholarship awards to students of Portuguese ancestry.&nbsp; We work with local media on featuring the Portuguese culture and history, and partner\/participate with other Portuguese organizations as appropriate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We own a collection of books, music, and videos, Portuguese artifacts, and an archive of historic photographs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacramentophcs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.sacramentophcs.com<\/a>, provides information about PHCS, events and more.&nbsp;
